Morocco has about 32 million inhabitants. The country has experienced throughout the xx th century, rapid population growth, which has increased its population by 6 since 1912. During the same period the proportion of urban residents increased steadily up to 55% in 2005: the country now has thirty cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants (while none existed a century ago), three cities have more than one million inhabitants: Casablanca, Rabat-Fez and 86 .
Morocco is one of the first countries in Africa after Tunisia and Algeria to have started its demographic transition : the total fertility rate dropped from 7.2 to 2.5 between 1962 and 2004 86 .

Most Moroccans are Arabic and Muslim Sunni Maliki rite. Today Amazigh are estimated at about 40%, the majority of them being also considered as they speak Moroccan Arabic Arabic fluently 87 population. The first Muslim conquests in Morocco dates back to the vii th century but the installation of Arab tribes became especially from the x th century .
Comparison of Arab and Berber population intake populations already present, suggesting that this phenomenon was mainly linguisto-cultural with the Arabization and Islamization 88 . This explains most of the Arabic countries. Furthermore, a second contribution of Arabic-speaking populations became the xv th century with the expulsion of the Andalusians and Moriscos from Spain, which amplified the Arabization process especially in the north.
Finally, the slave trade , which ends with the colonization contributed to the mixing of the population. After the creation of the 'State Israel , the Jewish minority in Morocco left the country. Today there are about 3,000 Jews in Morocco 89 .
Most foreigners living in Morocco are French and Spanish . More and more European retirees come to live in Morocco, particularly Marrakech .
